An international expert on Human Trafficking, Sylvia will relate information on human trafficking across the state today:
- How to recognize the signs of trafficking – red flags you can identify
- Common places/methods in which traffickers approach potential victims
- What to do when you identify someone you feel has been trafficked
- Challenges for law enforcement, prosecutors, and advocates
- How you can help fight trafficking in your community
Sylvia’s career began as a member of the Honolulu Police Department Domestic Abuse Response Team. She was a member of the Washington State Governor’s Anti-Trafficking Taskforce and the Washington Anti-Trafficking Resource Network in 2008 and has a long history of involvement in anti-trafficking efforts in Washington State, the US, and internationally.
From 2000 to 2010 Sylvia served as a Violence Against Women and Human Rights Specialist on Trafficking at the United Nations. Sylvia has conducted human trafficking investigations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; conducted human trafficking training in South America; led trafficking response teams in collaboration with the FBI; participated in high level human trafficking briefings at the White House; and provided human trafficking training for visiting delegations from Croatia, Tanzania, Senegal, Russia, Japan, Korea, Iraq, Philippines, and Albania.
