Trafficking in Indian Country - Part I
2:00-3:00 pm ET

MECP has partnered with the AMBER Alert Training and Technical Assistance Program to host the Tribal and Human Trafficking Thursdays Series. This series will bring together state, local and tribal subject matter experts (SME) to identify common types of violence, risk factors for violence and signs of possible victimization among children, including those in tribal country. Presenters will also include trafficking survivors and victim advocates who will share their stories and perspectives on developing victim-centric responses in an effort to more effectively serve and support child victims. The series will identify solutions to increase collaboration between state, local, and tribal communities in response to the exploitation of children and other forms of child victimization issues, develop appropriate agency responses, and effectively address the needs of victims.

Human trafficking is an issue that has proven not to have cultural, socio-economic, or local boundaries. Globally, there has seen a rise in the number of reported trafficking cases, and as is evident from recent reports no one community is exempt. While there is no one common profile for victims of trafficking, particular populations merit special consideration, as they are characterized by additional vulnerabilities. This webinar is part one of a two-part segment, entitled Trafficking in Indian Country. The webinar will explore the unique factors that place tribal youth most at risk for victimization and exploitation. It will discuss the considerations for working with tribal youth as well as with tribal authorities on investigations.

Participants will:

  • Develop a knowledge of the cultural considerations for working with Tribal Communities
  • Develop a knowledge of jurisdictional considerations for working with tin Indian Country
  • Develop a knowledge of the barriers when addressing issues related to trafficking in Indian Country

We are very privileged to have Linda Smith, come speak to those interested in the Ellensburg area. Linda is a leader in the global movement to end sex trafficking of women and children around the world and in the United States. In 1998, while still a member of the U.S. Congress, Linda traveled to Falkland Road in Mumbai, India—one of the worst brothel districts in the world. The hopeless faces of desperate women and children forced into prostitution compelled Linda to found Shared Hope International (SHI). SHI was established to support shelter and service creation for sex trafficking survivors using a comprehensive model for restoration. Today, Shared Hope provides leadership in education and training, prevention strategies, research, and policy initiatives.

As a foremost expert on international and domestic trafficking, Linda has spoken out against the trafficking of women and children in numerous Congressional hearings and in national and international forums, such as the World Conference on Trafficking and the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission on the Protection of Children. Linda has participated in more than 300 media interviews, and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, USA Today, Dan Rather Reports, ABC News, the Dr. Phil show, O’Reilly Factor, and CBN. Linda received the 2009 Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award and the 2010 Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women. Course Objectives:

At the end of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe what trafficking looks like in our community.
  • Discuss potential physical & social behavioral indicators of possible victims.
  • Understand the role of technology in the enticement/recruitment of victims.
  • Ask pertinent screening questions related to trafficking
  • Identify the needs of trafficking victims.
  • Have a beginning knowledge of objective documentation of medical findings for forensic analysis.

For additional information, contact:
Candice Bluechel 509.948.8978 or
Kay Olson 509-438-4604

This training is a follow up to last November’s training where participants learned some of the various ways victims are enticed into the web of trafficking. Lack of training has been identified as a significant barrier to health care professionals’ ability to identify victims/survivors of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation both nationally and regionally. When trainings are available for health care professionals, the trainings are often provided by non-medical professionals and focus on awareness building or the general dynamics of the phenomenon.

This course will focus on medical evaluation of persons affected by sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation and will expand on ways to identify potential trafficked victims and provide examples of potential screening questions.

Rachell Ekroos is a family nurse practitioner specializing in forensic nursing. She holds two national ANCC Board Certifications, one as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a second in Advanced Forensic Nursing. She has extensive advanced practice and interdisciplinary experience serving populations affected by violence. Her expertise related to violence across the lifespan includes sexual assault/abuse, intimate partner violence, interpersonal violence, and physical maltreatment. Additional areas of specialized expertise include human trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation and technology-facilitated crimes against children. She has served as a clinical resource and investigative consultant to numerous organizations and governmental entities.

Mrs. Ekroos is a published author and national speaker on various forensic nursing topics. Her teaching roles have included adjunct faculty, clinical faculty, preceptor faculty, and faculty for interdisciplinary forensic courses. Mrs. Ekroos is also a Distinguished Fellow of the International Association of Forensic Nurses, serves as a portfolio reviewer for the ANCC Advanced Forensic Nursing Board Certification program, and is Chair of the IAFN Scope and Standards of Forensic Nursing Practice task force.

Human trafficking discussed by WSU Tri-Cities panel

October 2, 2015, noon

RICHLAND, Wash. – Washington State University Tri-Cities will host a free, public panel discussion to raise awareness about human trafficking noon-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the West Atrium on campus.

“This is something that is happening right now in the Tri-Cities,” said Mark Mansperger, clinical associate professor of anthropology. “Horrible things are going on right underneath our noses. The panel is a way to raise awareness about the subject and discuss how we can help prevent it.”

He organized the event to tie in with a course he is teaching: Anthropology 395, “Contemporary Human Issues.”

“I thought the panel would make for an excellent way to increase awareness about the issue within the community while engaging the students on a topic they are learning about in class,” he said.

Panel members will include Betty Adams, one of the original directors of the Tri-Cities Coalition Against Trafficking; Suzi Carpino, engagement specialist at Benton-Franklin Counties Juvenile Justice Center; and Kay Olson, nursing instructor at WSU Tri-Cities.

“I first learned about human trafficking through one of our nursing clinical sites a couple of years ago,” Olson said. “I was both astounded and ashamed because I had no idea this was happening in our area. I figure that if I wasn’t aware, there must be many who also didn’t know, so I decided to do something about it.”

Olson created a clinical experience for her students to raise awareness about the issue. She has since been able to bring several exhibits, discussion panels and more to the campus and surrounding community.

Prior to Thorn, Maia came from the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, where she spearheaded the Human Exploitation and Trafficking (H.E.A.T.) Watch Program, a nationally recognized, award-winning 5-point strategy to combat modern-day slavery. While at H.E.A.T. Watch, she developed several initiatives, such as an annual billboard campaign, graphic novel series, community engagement app, radio show, online H.E.A.T. Watch toolkit, and a weekly, multidisciplinary SafetyNet Program to address the stabilization and needs of at risk and involved CSEC youth.

In 2010, Maia worked directly with survivors as a Client Services & Outreach Fellow for Polaris, a national NGO dedicated to combatting domestic human trafficking. She also started her own radio show about modern-day slavery, and interned for The SOLD Project to raise money for educational scholarships for children at risk of commercial sexual exploitation in Thailand. Maia holds a B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley, and is pursuing her M.B.A. from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.
