Ester Huey To Be Honored
by Zonta Club of Yakima Valley
in recognition of International Women’s Day
In recognition of International Women’s Day, the Zonta Club of
Yakima Valley will honor Ester Huey as an example of the positive influence
one woman can have on her community. The Zonta Club will plant a yellow
rose bush in honor of Ms. Huey in the Rose Garden which the club created
and maintains at the Yakima Area Arboretum. A plaque bearing Ms. Huey’s
name will be placed at the base of the rose bush. On Friday, March 7th,
Ester Huey will receive one long stemmed yellow rose which will symbolize
the larger gift (the rose bush)as well as Zonta.
Ms. Huey has been a tireless advocate and community leader for many years.
She has addressed issues such as child safety, family support, juvenile
delinquency, substance abuse, early childhood education, and the opportunities
of diversity.
This year's International Women's Day coincides with the Zonta International's
Rose Day. On Rose Day, Zontians are encouraged to publicly distribute
yellow roses or items bearing the image of yellow roses, accompanied by
information about Zonta International.
The United Nations established International Women's Day in 1977 to celebrate
the rights of women and international peace. However, its history stretches
back to the early 1900s, when women's organizations used the day to rally
support for their causes: from the universal suffrage movement to the
protest of poor working conditions. The theme for 2008 is: “Investing
in Women and Girls”.
